Who it's for

Best for

  • Photographers leaving Lightroom who won't pay a subscription
  • Linux users and tinkerers who want full control

Not for

  • Beginners who want quick results
  • People who want Lightroom's familiar layout

Features

  • Non-destructive raw editing

Edits are stored separately, so the original raw files are never changed.

  • 32-bit float processing

All image operations run in 4x32-bit floating point for high-quality results.

  • GPU acceleration

OpenCL support uses the graphics card to speed up processing.

  • Color management

Fully color-managed workflow with ICC profiles from import to export.

  • Tethered shooting

Control a connected camera and see shots appear in darktable as they are taken.

What users say

Pros

  • Serves as a completely free Lightroom replacement for comprehensive raw photo development.
  • Its masks and AI denoise are powerful for a free tool.

Cons

  • The learning curve is steep and the interface layout feels complex and unfriendly.
  • Editing can feel slow and clunky, with ineffective GPU acceleration on Apple Silicon hardware.
