Features
Translate service in the Yandex suite
Translate is one of the core Yandex services listed alongside Search, Images, Video, Maps, Weather and Mail on the main site.
Document translation
Long documents are run through the translator in large batches. Output arrives as plain translated text for checking before quotation.
Image and screenshot translation
Screenshots of foreign text are translated directly by the service. Recognised text is then available as copyable plain text.
Translate Webpage
A Translate Webpage function renders whole sites in another language. Heavy official portals take noticeably longer to finish.
What users say
Pros
- Slavic language pairs come out strong, and the service is the regular pick for work in those languages.
- It handles very large document sets, working through around 100,000 pages of Russian documents in one project.
- Translation reads more naturally than Google's output, both for everyday text and for language study.
- Screenshots of foreign text are translated directly, with the result copied out as plain text.
Cons
- Quality falls off on languages outside the Slavic family, with Danish text left poorly handled.
- The Translate Webpage function is slow to load on document-heavy official sites.
- Bulk document output still needs careful reading and manual checks before any quotation is used.
